My friends and I arrived too late to see the 5th Dimension (and apparently parachute guy), but just in time to walk around and survey the people, the vendors, and take in the whole big deal before the Doors came onstage. At first we sat halfway up the hill in the amphitheater but after a couple of songs we just wandered right down to the edge of the stage for the rest of the performance.
It still stands out in my mind as one of the most memorable things I ever did see and hear.

Unlike a great deal of the audience we were sober as judges (that's why I remember this!), but high on the atmosphere nonetheless. It was quite a day.
By the time the bus got us back down to the parking lot we were as hungry as woodpeckers with sore beaks.

No one realized at the time that it was probably the beginning and the end of the fun. After that weekend it was all big business. But not a bad intro for a fourteen year old Bay Area kid.

Creed, that guy from 'The Office,' was one of the Grass roots. Too much.

I didn't know about this ! What a unusual group of artists ! Look at this list ! The Doors, Dionne Warwick, The Seeds,The 5th Dimension, and the Hells Angels !

I am a Captain Beefheat fan, and this show is famous for him sabotaging his early career . After this his music got much more "out there", and he turned against drugs . They had just put out "Safe as Milk" .

To support the album's release the group had been scheduled to play at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. During this period Vliet suffered severe anxiety attacks that made him convinced that he was having a heart attack, possibly exacerbated by his heavy LSD use and the fact that his father had died of heart failure a few years earlier. At a vital 'warm-up' performance at the Mt. Tamalpais Festival (June 10/11) shortly before the scheduled Monterey Festival (June 16/18), the band began to play "Electricity" and Van Vliet froze, straightened his tie, then walked off the ten–foot (3 m) stage and landed on manager Bob Krasnow. He later claimed he had seen a girl in the audience turn into a fish, with bubbles coming from her mouth.[46] This aborted any opportunity of breakthrough success at Monterey, as Cooder immediately decided he could no longer work with Van Vliet,[26] effectively quitting both the event and the band on the spot.
